Where Mystras Is Still Alive
During our climb through the ruined city of Mystras, we also visit the Pantanassa Monastery.
Visible from afar on the steep hillside, Pantanassa was founded in the 15th century and is the only monastery in Mystras that is still inhabited today.
Inside its walls, the atmosphere changes. Cats rest in the courtyard, a kitten soon finds its way onto my lap, and everything seems wonderfully peaceful.
The monastery church is decorated with frescoes from different centuries, some dating back to the 15th century. I could spend hours taking photographs here.
But the photographs can wait. For now, I simply enjoy the original.
And when we finally walk back down the mountain, we know that the climb was worth it.
